Jaipur. The skills of traditional artisans and craftspeople have long been a vital strength of the Indian economy. For generations, millions of individuals—including carpenters, masons, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, tailors, potters, and those in other traditional trades—have earned their livelihoods through their specialized skills. However, a lack of access to modern technology, superior tools, and sufficient capital has often made it difficult for these artisans to expand their businesses. In this context, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana—implemented under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—has emerged as a significant initiative aimed at strengthening traditional crafts, enhancing the efficiency of artisans, and fostering self-reliance. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Rajasthan has also made remarkable progress in areas such as registration, training, the provision of toolkit assistance, and the sanctioning of loans. To date, more than 2.30 lakh artisans have registered in the state, securing Rajasthan the fourth position nationwide. The scheme goes beyond mere financial aid; it emphasizes developing traditional skills to meet modern demands and creating new opportunities for self-employment. Its primary objective is to support traditional workers who possess the necessary skills but are unable to scale their operations due to limited resources. Through facilities such as training, access to modern equipment, and loans at concessional interest rates, they are being given the opportunity to strengthen their businesses.

Over 2.30 lakh registrations; Rajasthan ranks fourth in the country
As a result of efforts to enroll artisans and craftspeople in Rajasthan under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, more than 2.30 lakh beneficiaries have been registered in the state. Rajasthan currently ranks fourth in the country in terms of registrations. This figure reflects the state’s commitment to extending the benefits of the scheme to workers engaged in traditional trades. Rajasthan has a large number of artisans involved in professions such as carpentry and masonry. Under the scheme, 45,958 artisans in the carpentry category and 38,450 in the masonry category have been registered. These figures clearly indicate that traditional trades related to construction and woodwork are among the primary beneficiary groups in the state. The registration process provides eligible artisans with access to government support and training programs, which can help them improve the quality of their work, develop skills aligned with market needs, and expand their economic activities.

Basic training completed by over 2.22 lakh beneficiaries
A key objective of the scheme is to enhance the traditional skills of artisans, aligning them with modern technology and contemporary professional requirements. To this end, beneficiaries are provided with both basic and advanced training. In Rajasthan, 2,22,473 beneficiaries have completed their basic training so far. During the training, artisans receive instruction on techniques relevant to their trade, the effective use of tools and equipment, improving product quality, and increasing overall work efficiency. While experience holds significant value in traditional trades, the evolving landscape has brought changes to working methods, customer preferences, and market demands. In this context, training can help artisans integrate new technologies with their existing experience. For instance, carpenters can perform woodworking tasks with greater precision by using modern tools. Similarly, masons can enhance the quality of construction work by adopting new techniques and equipment. For workers in other traditional trades, training offers an opportunity to make their operations more organized and competitive. Furthermore, the training emphasizes providing artisans with knowledge about entrepreneurship, encouraging them to explore possibilities for expanding their businesses beyond traditional practices.

Toolkit Support for Acquiring Modern Equipment
One of the primary challenges faced by traditional artisans is the availability of high-quality tools. Often, the lack of necessary equipment prevents artisans from completing their work with the desired speed and quality. To address this, the PM Vishwakarma Yojana includes a provision for ‘toolkit support’ for eligible beneficiaries. Under the scheme, eligible artisans receive assistance of up to ₹15,000 to purchase toolkits. In Rajasthan, 217,084 e-vouchers have been issued for this purpose so far. With this support, eligible artisans can acquire modern tools relevant to their trade by following the prescribed procedure. The availability of better tools enhances the potential for improvements in work quality, productivity, and time management. The benefits of modern equipment extend beyond merely increasing the speed of work.
